Bláa lónið geothermal spa Iceland milky blue water

Iceland

Bláa lónið

Elemental, otherworldly

The Blue Lagoon sits in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula — 45 minutes from Reykjavík, built around a geothermal power plant's runoff water that turned out to be healing. The milky blue silica-rich water is 100°F year-round. In winter, steam rises around you while snow falls. In summer, the midnight sun keeps the sky pale gold at 11pm. Either way it doesn't feel real.

What to do there

  • 01

Book the Retreat Spa's private lagoon access for early morning (7am) before the main complex opens — the water is identical, the crowd is a fraction, and watching the steam rise off the lava field at dawn in silence is a completely different experience from peak hours.

  • 02

Stay one night at the Retreat Hotel at the lagoon — expensive, but the rooms open directly onto the water. You can walk into the lagoon at 2am in a bathrobe when it's empty. The geothermal water glows faintly in the dark.

  • 03

Drive the Reykjanes Peninsula beyond the lagoon — the volcanic landscape gets stranger the further you go. Gunnuhver hot spring has boiling mud pots and fumaroles, free to walk into. The Bridge Between Continents lets you stand with one foot on the North American plate and one on the Eurasian.

  • 04

Landmannalaugar (summer only, 4WD required) — 3 hours inland, a geothermal highland field where hot rivers run through black lava and rhyolite mountains striped red, ochre, and green. Natural hot spring pool, no infrastructure, otherworldly.

  • 05

Northern Lights from the Reykjanes Peninsula — drive 10 minutes from the lagoon away from Reykjavík's light pollution on a clear night (October–March), pull over on any gravel road, turn everything off. Check vedur.is before you go.

Best time to go

Any time of year — the lagoon is open year-round. November–February for Northern Lights + snow. June–August for midnight sun. Book months ahead regardless.

Insider tip

The silica mud masks are included with entry — scoop a handful from the dispensers inside the lagoon and apply it to your face while you float. Locals think it's mostly theater but your skin will feel different tomorrow.
