Colorful La Boca neighborhood in Buenos Aires

Argentina

Buenos Aires

Passion, culture, steak

Buenos Aires operates on a different clock — dinner starts at 10pm, the milonga doesn't get going until midnight, and the best milanesas are being fried at 2am in a restaurant that's been in the same family for four generations. This is a city that rewards people who have nowhere to be.

What to do there

  • 01

La Feria de Mataderos — held every Sunday (April–December) at the city's old livestock market on the southwestern edge. Over 15,000 locals come for live folk music, gaucho horsemanship demonstrations, homemade empanadas, and crafts. Zero tourist infrastructure, all in Spanish, and the dancing is genuine.

  • 02

Palacio Barolo (1370 Av. de Mayo) — a 1923 skyscraper designed around Dante's Inferno: lobby is Hell, tower is Purgatory, lighthouse is Paradise. Guided tours Tuesday–Saturday with rooftop access. The architecture is completely insane in the best way.

  • 03

Bar El Federal at the corner of Carlos Calvo and Perú in San Telmo — one of the oldest bars in Buenos Aires (1864), original wooden bar, antique tiles, old men playing cards in the back. Sit and drink a cortado and watch the neighborhood move.

  • 04

El Ateneo Grand Splendid (1860 Av. Santa Fe) — a 1919 theatre converted into a bookstore with the stage turned into a café. The boxes, painted ceiling, and balconies are all intact. Called the world's most beautiful bookstore and it doesn't disappoint.

  • 05

Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur — an 865-acre reserve built on a former dump that now harbors over 300 bird species along the Río de la Plata. Buenos Aires's Central Park equivalent, almost unknown to visitors. Binoculars on a weekend morning.

Best time to go

March–May or September–November. Summer is humid and hot; winter is mild but gray.

Insider tip

Don Julio on Guatemala 4691 in Palermo — a neighborhood parrilla where beef-obsessed Porteños go for their own anniversary dinners. Arrive at 7pm sharp when they open to get a table before the rush.
