Table Mountain over Cape Town

South Africa

Cape Town

Wild, dramatic, alive

Cape Town is one of the most physically beautiful cities on Earth and also one of the most complex. Table Mountain's shadow falls on wine estates and townships alike. The travelers who come back are the ones who went deeper.

What to do there

  • 01

Oranjezicht City Farm Market at Granger Bay (Saturday mornings) — small-batch cheesemakers, heirloom seeders, bakers up since 3am, fishermen who came in at dawn. Overlooks the harbor with Table Mountain behind you. Truth Coffee on Buitenkant Street is nearby: a Victorian-steampunk roastery called one of the world's best.

  • 02

Lion's Head at sunset instead of sunrise — the standard sunrise hike is crowded with guided groups. The sunset version empties out as you descend, and watching the Atlantic go orange from the summit with Table Mountain behind you is the photo the brochure doesn't show.

  • 03

Neighbourgoods Market in the Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock (Saturday 9am–2pm) — a converted Victorian mill with DJs playing vinyl and every style of food from Cape Malay curry to freshly shucked oysters. One of the best food markets in the world.

  • 04

Kalk Bay — 45 minutes south by train, a working fishing village with a small harbor where snoek boats come in. Kalk Bay Theatre hosts live music in a converted fisherman's warehouse. Brass Bell restaurant is built directly into the rocks over the ocean.

  • 05

Bo-Kaap neighborhood before 10am — the pastel-painted houses of the Cape Malay community glow best in early light. A koeksister from a local bakery on Wale Street, then walk the steep lanes before photographers arrive. The community has been here since the 17th century.

Best time to go

February through April for warm weather. October to December for wildflowers along the peninsula.

Insider tip

Hire a local guide for a half-day cultural township tour of Langa — jazz clubs, shebeens, food, and what the city looks like from that side of history. It changes the rest of the trip.
