19,341 feet, the tallest free-standing mountain on earth, and the only summit at this altitude a reasonably fit person with zero technical skills can actually reach. The last six hours to Uhuru Peak — scree, headlamps, negative temperatures — are the part nobody forgets.
What to do there
- 01
The Machame route (7 days) — the overwhelming r/hiking and r/WildernessBackpacking pick over the shorter Marangu 'Coca-Cola route.' The extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp is what gets people to the top.
- 02
Lemosho or the Northern Circuit (8–9 days) — the highest summit success rates (90%+), fewer crowds, and a longer approach from the west through the Shira Plateau. The Reddit consensus pick if budget allows.
- 03
Summit night push from Barafu Camp starting around 11pm — six-plus hours in the dark to reach Stella Point at sunrise, then another 45 minutes along the crater rim to Uhuru. Bring two pairs of gloves; one will freeze.
- 04
Book through a KPAP-certified operator — Altezza Travel, Popote Africa Adventures, and Kandoo Adventures are the repeat recommendations on r/Kilimanjaro. $2,200–$3,500 for a proper Machame; avoid sub-$1,800 operators for porter welfare reasons.
- 05
Post-climb decompression at Aishi Machame Hotel or Kaliwa Lodge in Moshi — hot shower, pool, and the first beer genuinely tastes like a religious experience.
Best time to go
January through mid-March (clear, cold, fewer crowds, occasional snow on summit) or mid-June through October (driest and most stable, also most crowded). Avoid April–May and November — rainy seasons make the lower forest sections miserable and summit visibility poor.
Insider tip
Diamox (acetazolamide) is not optional for most people — start 250mg twice daily the day before you begin, and drink 4+ litres a day. And tip your porters in cash, in person, at the final camp; KPAP publishes recommended brackets ($20/porter/day). The crew makes or breaks your summit.
