Colorful streets of Lisbon

Portugal

Lisbon

Warmth, coast, old world

Lisbon is the city that almost stayed a secret. It's still sun-bleached and slightly melancholy in the best way — a place where fado floats out of unmarked doors and where the best meal you'll eat might be a bifanas at a stand that's been there since 1974. The hills keep it honest.

What to do there

  • 01

A Cevicheria in Principe Real (Rua Dom Pedro V, 129) — chef Kiko Martins's Peruvian-Portuguese fusion, specifically the tuna tiradito and octopus ceviche. Walk-in only for lunch; arrive at noon when it opens. Consistently named by expats as the meal they think about most.

  • 02

LX Factory on a Sunday — a 19th-century textile complex in Alcântara turned open-air market. Skip the jewelry stalls and go straight to Ler Devagar, the bookstore in a former printing press with a bicycle suspended mid-air among the shelves and a mezzanine café.

  • 03

Tasca do Chico (Rua do Diário de Notícias, 39, Bairro Alto) is the fado house that Lisboetas take their out-of-town family — intimate, unreserved, slightly heartbreaking. Tables pushed close together, musicians who play because they can't help it.

  • 04

Miradouro da Graça is the locals' answer to tourist-crammed Santa Catarina viewpoint — quieter, a kiosk selling cheap wine in plastic cups, overlooking the castle and river in one frame. Arrive 20 minutes before sunset.

  • 05

Tram 28 is worth riding, but only from Estrela to Alfama — not the reverse — on a Tuesday morning at half-capacity. Sit on the wooden bench at the back and watch the old city compress and expand as it climbs.

Best time to go

May through June, or September. July and August get hot and crowded. Spring has Atlantic breezes and everything blooms.

Insider tip

Ginjinha — a sweet morello cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup at A Ginjinha bar on Largo de São Domingos for €1.40. Go to the original (from 1840) and drink it standing on the square. It's what Lisboetas do before dinner.
