Algarve sea caves and golden cliffs

Portugal

Algarve

Coast, cliffs, golden hour

The Algarve everyone pictures — the layered orange limestone cliffs, the turquoise water — is real. But there are two Algaves: the strip of mega-resorts east of Faro, and the quieter western coast near Sagres and Portimão where fishermen still haul octopus by hand. Go west.

What to do there

  • 01

Portimão's sardine grills on Rua Teófilo de Braga — the whole quayside smells of grilling sardines in late summer. Vendors grill over charcoal at outdoor tables, €8 a plate with piri piri and a cold Sagres beer. The town takes this seriously enough to have an annual Sardine Festival.

  • 02

Praia da Bordeira and Praia do Amado near Carrapateira — wild Atlantic beaches backed by dunes and heath, almost no services. Town of Carrapateira has A Eira do Mel, a tiny fish restaurant that makes the drive worth it.

  • 03

Sagres fortress at the southwest corner of Europe — an enormous 15th-century windswept promontory where Prince Henry the Navigator launched the Age of Exploration. A giant compass rose carved into the ground, a small chapel, and Atlantic wind that doesn't stop. Go at sunset and stay for the stars.

  • 04

Rio Arade kayak from Portimão upriver to Silves — paddle past orange orchards and cork oak forest with the 13th-century Moorish castle appearing on the hill ahead. Rent from Kayak Adventures Silves; lunch in Silves at O Barradas, a converted farmhouse restaurant.

  • 05

Alte — a mountain village 30km inland from Albufeira that operates in the Algarve before mass tourism. Limestone lanes, a natural spring where locals fill jugs, and a traditional tasca serving pork with clams and local wine for €12.

Best time to go

May, June, and September — ocean warm enough, crowds manageable, light extraordinary.

Insider tip

The cliffs at Praia de Marinha are best at 7:30am — walk down from the clifftop parking lot 30 minutes before sunrise and watch the light hit the limestone. Then drive to Padaria Pastelaria Monte da Lua in Carvoeiro for a pastel de nata still warm from the oven.
