Queenstown New Zealand lakefront with Remarkables mountains reflected in Lake Wakatipu

New Zealand

Queenstown

Mountains, lake, edge

Queenstown exists at the edge of things — the Remarkables rising sheer from Lake Wakatipu, the Southern Alps half an hour west, and the quality of light here that makes everything look slightly more real than it should. It built its reputation on adrenaline (it invented modern bungee jumping, commercial skydiving as a tourist activity, and jet boating) but the food has quietly caught up. Between the mountains and the pinot noir, it earns its keep.

What to do there

  • 01

The Routeburn Track — one of New Zealand's Great Walks, 32km through the Fiordland wilderness connecting Queenstown and Te Anau, with mountain passes and glacial valleys that have no equal in the country. Book the Routeburn Lodge huts months in advance (DOC lottery opens in June). Day hike from the Queenstown end to Routeburn Flats for a taste without the full commitment.

  • 02

Gibbston Valley wine trail by bicycle — the Gibbston cycle trail runs 20km along the Kawarau River gorge past pinot noir vineyards in the world's southernmost wine region. Rent a bike in Arrowtown, ride the trail, stop at Brennan Wines for a tasting, continue to Kinross for lunch, and take the shuttle back. The schist canyon landscape is extraordinary.

  • 03

Milford Sound day trip by road — the 3-hour drive from Queenstown through Fiordland National Park, past Mirror Lakes, through the Homer Tunnel and down into the fiord. Take the Jucy Cruise (real kayakers among the 500,000-strong vessel crowds). The waterfalls Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls — 160m straight into the sea. Go in the rain; Milford has 7 metres of annual rainfall and it's more dramatic wet.

  • 04

Coronet Peak skiing at first lift on a powder morning — New Zealand's ski season runs July through September. Coronet Peak is 18km from town; first chair at 9am on a fresh snow day. Runs to every level, and the après-ski at the base lodge is an institution. The gondola from town serves the Stratosfare restaurant at the summit.

  • 05

Arrowtown in autumn — a 20-minute drive from Queenstown, a former gold rush town in a willow-and-poplar valley that turns orange and gold in April–May. The Lakes District Museum tells the story of the Chinese miners who worked the Arrow River in the 1870s. Lunch at Saffron on Buckingham Street, which has been doing slow-cooked Central Otago lamb since 2001.

Best time to go

June–September for skiing; December–February for hiking and lake activities. March–May (autumn) for the best colour and quieter trails. Avoid school holiday periods in January and July.

Insider tip

Fergburger on Shotover Street has a 30-minute queue at peak times and it's genuinely worth it — the venison burger with blue cheese is one of the best burgers in the southern hemisphere. Go at 11am when it opens or after 10pm when the queue clears. They're open 24 hours.
