The Colosseum in Rome

Rome

Ancient, beautiful, eternal

Rome is the only city where you stub your toe on 2,000-year-old marble and nobody notices because there's more marble around the corner. The travelers who love it most gave up sightseeing and started living it — eating lunch where taxi drivers eat, watching the neighborhood come alive in the evening passeggiata.

What to do there

  • 01

Testaccio's Mercato Testaccio (Via Beniamino Franklin) — Rome's food neighborhood, built on the slaughterhouse district where offal cooking was invented. Flavio al Velavevodetto in the shadow of the Palatine Hill serves traditional Roman pasta to actual Romans. The market sells supplì (fried rice balls) at stall 15 for €1.50.

  • 02

Pigneto neighborhood east of Termini — working-class, slightly grungy, great aperitivo bars, no tourists. Bar Necci dal 1924 (Via Fanfulla da Lodi, 68) is a landmark café Pier Paolo Pasolini frequented, still serving campari sodas on a cobblestone terrace.

  • 03

Gianicolo Hill at dusk — less-visited than the Pincian Hill viewpoints, quieter panorama over all of Rome. A cannon fires at noon every day (tradition since 1847). Walk up from Trastevere and take your time coming back down.

  • 04

The Protestant Cemetery (Cimitero Acattolico) in Testaccio — where Keats and Shelley are buried. A genuinely beautiful walled garden of cypress trees and 19th-century graves, almost always empty. Open every morning.

  • 05

Aperitivo hour in Prati — the neighborhood opposite Castel Sant'Angelo from the tourist trail. Il Sorpasso (Via Properzio, 31): long list of natural wines, housemade cured meats, tables spilling onto the street.

Best time to go

April–May and September–October. November is beautiful and almost empty.

Insider tip

Lunch is the meal in Rome. Restaurants serve a fixed pranzo of pasta + main + wine for €12–16 that would cost €50 at dinner. Locals eat at 1:30pm, then disappear for three hours.
